Is farming good for the environment?

This is the writing task I did for online learning

Farming is good for the environment.

Farming is also known as agriculture. It is the science of plants and animals. We grow crops for vegetables and fruits and other stuff. Some people think that farming doesn’t do anything to help the environment. Others think that it can help the environment.
So which side is right?

Farming is good for the environment because we don’t need to cook these crops, but you could if you wanted.  Fires cause smoke, and smoke traps heat, and heat contributes to climate change by melting the polar ice caps. Crops also suck up CO2 in the air.

But there is another side to this argument. Livestock farming is not good for the environment because some animals release methane gas.Methane gas releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and the sun traps the heat from the carbon dioxide, and it’s so hot it kills corals, which means there’s no place for the fish to live.

Farming is good as long as scientists come up with a way to make it less harmful for the environment.

I like this activity because this was very educational.
Do you think farming is good for the environment?

  1. Nicholas I can see you have worked really hard on this piece of writing. You have clearly stated what farming is and given some reasons for and against farming being good for the environment.
It’s great to see that you have identified the two sides to the argument and made your own opinion at the end. Well Done.

  2. Great points! You did lots of research to back your points up. It is a tricky situation. I think we need to have farms but how can it have less of an impact on our environment. I wonder if you or someone in your generation will solve this problem as you grow up.
